PVD coating on jewellery — how it is made and what it withstands

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is a physical coating process. In a vacuum, a thin, hard layer is applied to the metal — atom by atom. This creates colours such as gold, black or rose that are even and more abrasion-resistant than conventional plating.

The difference from plating: electroplating dips the metal into a chemical bath. PVD works physically and produces a denser, harder layer. For jewellery worn every day, that is a noticeable advantage.

Still, no coating is indestructible. Intensive friction can leave marks over time — as with any coated jewellery. At ZEYD, the best way to care for PVD pieces is to avoid contact with perfume, chlorine and harsh cleaning products.
